The story of James Pratt (1880 - 1968)
James Pratt, born in north England in the late nineteenth century, spent much of his life working on the railway. But whilst he was a signalman by profession, he was a preacher of the Word by vocation. For seventy years, he served the Methodist Church as a local circuit preacher, and preached Christ not only with words but also by example, holding fast to the gospel and timeless Christian values. He also took these values into the local community, contributing for over 40 years to the National Union of Railwaymen, and serving as a parish councillor.
As you read this story of an ordinary man whom God used to have a great impact for his kingdom, you too will find yourself encouraged to remain faithful to Christ in your own life and, as the apostle Paul wrote, to ‘run in such a way as to get the prize’.
…a sense of a Christian lifestyle and passion that is rarely seen in today’s modern world.

The story of James Pratt, ‘a railway signalman by occupation but a preacher of the Word by vocation’, evokes a sense of a Christian lifestyle and passion that is rarely seen in today’s modern world. Modern society has made us product-rich but time-poor. We have time-saving gadgets, computers, smartphones and most have cars, yet we seem to have less time to serve the Lord. The life of James Pratt stands in sharp contrast to our modern way of life. Here was a man, product-poor but time-rich – time well spent in serving and preaching the gospel.
As you read this biography of a life lived in the service of the gospel, you might find yourself inspired to be more committed to reaching people with the gospel and supporting those in the Christian community who can no longer regularly attend their local church meetings.
The challenge of James Pratt’s life is this: what legacy will you leave? ‘…the most valuable legacy we can pass on to our children and grandchildren is not material but spiritual.’
The final words of James’ final sermon are at the heart of the narrative and encapsulate the passion and drive he had all his life: ‘If you never remember anything else I’ve said from this pulpit, remember this: ‘Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved.”
