Jesus on food

Jesus on food

When Jesus spoke to his disciples, he often used everyday experiences to teach them valuable spiritual lessons.
Here David Muskett looks at the many times when Jesus used food and mealtimes to reveal principles of God’s Kingdom, finding parallels in our British love of baking and fine dining.
These short, easily digestible sermons will leave you inspired and empowered to live out your everyday life from an eternal, heavenly perspective.

Each of these sermons is a sacramental meal ready for sharing.

David’s first book Jesus on Gardening was, I admitted, not a title which would have me reaching for a copy from the bookshelf as I am not a keen gardener! However, a book with ‘Food’ in the title is a very different matter – I wouldn’t be able to resist picking it up and, as I did find out with David’s previous book, this one does not disappoint either!
“What’s it all about then?” – the question I asked myself about David’s book as I read it through which, as the reader will find out, is the encouragement David gives us when reflecting on Scripture!
For me the answer came through quickly and clearly as David’s book is another great opportunity to immerse myself in the Scriptures, to unpack some of the mystery of my faith in God, and to follow some of the signposts which encourage me to deepen my faith and draw closer to the risen Jesus.
David has a real gift to bring an account of the teaching of Christ to life and the focus of Jesus and food reminded me of the invitation to build my faith around the opportunities for hospitality – offered and received – and allow God to work through all that was offered.
For preachers and congregations this book is a resource providing nourishment which will sustain and strengthen our journey of faith and life.

As someone who thinks about what they are going to have for dinner while they are eating their breakfast the idea of a book entitled Jesus on Food was always going to appeal to me! With chapter headings that make you think ‘I wonder what that’s all about’, and a clear writing style, David doesn’t play down the complexity of the subjects he is dealing with but instead presents them in a manner that is easy to read; highlighting elements of Jesus’ life and ministry which are often glossed over or perceived as irrelevant to the modern reader. I’d recommend this book to anyone ‘hungry’ to find the extraordinary in the everyday act of sharing bread.

David’s second book is as warmly and seductively written as his first. He draws his readers with humour and the skills of a consummate preacher into the first century world of Jesus, before challenging us with profound theological truths and practical advice for our lives in the twenty-first century. Each chapter could be described as well-kneaded dough that gradually rises to feed us with perfectly baked food from the Master’s table! I would endorse this book for four important reasons:

  1. It is firmly grounded in God’s Word, the Bible, as any sermon should be.
  2. It constantly points us to Jesus, ‘the pioneer and perfecter of our faith’.
  3. It excites me with the constant revelations from the biblical text to want to keep reading more!
  4. It gives us the space to reflect on what is said and draw some of our own conclusions

I’m sure readers will look at both the teaching of Jesus and their own relationship with food in a new light after reading this book!
