Seeing the Light

Seeing the Light

£2.99£8.99

An illuminating collection of well-known Bible stories told from a unique perspective. See Jesus through the eyes of some of the people whose lives He impacted.

Throughout the Gospels, Jesus impacted the lives of many. This thought-provoking collection of stories is told from the perspective of some of those people, helping you to see Jesus as they might have seen him. For example: The mother of the boy who gave his loaves and fish to Jesus, to feed the five thousand, remembers how an ordinary day became quite extraordinary. Simon the Pharisee recalls his embarrassment when Jesus came for dinner and allowed a known and unannounced prostitute to weep at his feet. Herod’s jailer marvels as he recounts the remarkable boldness of the one known as the Baptiser, who spoke unfiltered truth, face-to-face with the King. Easy-to-read and with helpful details about the context and culture of each encounter, you will find the Gospel narratives coming to life in a fresh way that challenges us today.

Rt Revd Robert Atwell

How do we create a feeling of surprise about Christianity in a society that views all religion with suspicion, is allergic to dogma but hungers after spirituality? Ruth Carter responds to this challenge by enabling a new generation of readers to meet Jesus through an imaginative retelling of the encounters and experiences of different characters in the Gospel. Her writing is fresh and accessible, bringing situations and people to life, and allowing us to find our place in the story and to ‘see the light’.

Using a conversational style, Ruth invites the reader to meet with some of the ‘smaller’ characters in the Gospels. Her imaginative approach to the Gospel narrative brings these individuals to life in a new way and encourages us to enter into their story. As we do so, we are invited to make connections between these individual stories and the wider biblical metanarrative by the helpful biblical quotes used by the author. Whether you are exploring the Scriptures for the first time or are more familiar with the text, this book will help you to deepen your own journey of faith.

Prof. Mike Higton

Ruth Carter’s retellings of Gospel stories are luminous. With compelling imagination and vivid prose, she takes us into the lives, concerns and hopes of the women and men who encountered Jesus. The settings are deftly realised, the characters’ voices thoroughly believable, but deeper than all that is Carter’s capturing of moments of transformation. Again and again, she leads us to the point in the story where light breaks through, and life is illuminated. The gift of this beautiful book is its transparency to that light.
