How do we create a feeling of surprise about Christianity in a society that views all religion with suspicion, is allergic to dogma but hungers after spirituality? Ruth Carter responds to this challenge by enabling a new generation of readers to meet Jesus through an imaginative retelling of the encounters and experiences of different characters in the Gospel. Her writing is fresh and accessible, bringing situations and people to life, and allowing us to find our place in the story and to ‘see the light’.

Using a conversational style, Ruth invites the reader to meet with some of the ‘smaller’ characters in the Gospels. Her imaginative approach to the Gospel narrative brings these individuals to life in a new way and encourages us to enter into their story. As we do so, we are invited to make connections between these individual stories and the wider biblical metanarrative by the helpful biblical quotes used by the author. Whether you are exploring the Scriptures for the first time or are more familiar with the text, this book will help you to deepen your own journey of faith.

Ruth Carter’s retellings of Gospel stories are luminous. With compelling imagination and vivid prose, she takes us into the lives, concerns and hopes of the women and men who encountered Jesus. The settings are deftly realised, the characters’ voices thoroughly believable, but deeper than all that is Carter’s capturing of moments of transformation. Again and again, she leads us to the point in the story where light breaks through, and life is illuminated. The gift of this beautiful book is its transparency to that light.
