The Diocese of Salisbury shares ‘A Surprising Discovery’
The E-Newsletter 'Grapevine' of the Diocese of Salisbury has promoted 'Treasures From a Deep Mine' in an article titled 'A Surprising Discovery' in its March mailout
Mary Treacher, daughter of Alison Daunton-Fear, has spoken to the writers of Grapevine about the discovery of a large number of her late mother’s sermon notes, that have now been published into the book Treasures From a Deep Mine.
Alison passed away in 2001, but Mary explains that it was not until 2018 that her brother Andrew discovered one of the handwritten talks, while going through some files, not long before finding a folder containing over 100 more.
“On top of them all lay a luggage label on which she had written: ‘Just in case you thought I spent all my time in the kitchen. Mum.’”
Mary says that she typed each script and between her brother, her sister and herself, they chose their favourite 40. They then proceeded to share some with friends, as well as Andrew’s former Bishop in Rochester Diocese and several other prominent people. All responded warmly.
She then proceeds to share a bit about both her parents’ relationship and lifestyle.
“Mother was Senior Student at Ridgelands Bible College when, in the early 1930s, she attended my father’s ordination. Subsequently they married and her considerable Bible knowledge was put to good use in assisting him in his ministry in England and later on, overseas. She was generally given charge of women’s groups, particularly the Mothers’ Union.”
On reflection of her own childhood, she also adds,
“I can certainly remember having to take make-shift shelter at very short notice! Mother’s war-time talks must have given comfort at that time to many anguished minds.”
The family had later emigrated to Australia, where Mary explains that her mother became more active again, even giving a series of Epilogues on the local radio station.

About the Book
This book is a collection of 40 talks by Alison Daunton-Fear, a gifted preacher whose ministry spanned a large part of the twentieth century, including during the years of the Second World War. As the Church of England did not allow women to be ordained at that time, she mainly preached to women’s groups, especially the Mothers’ Union, but her powerful sermons speak to us all today. Her work complemented that of her ordained husband Richard, who eventually became an Archdeacon in Australia.
Alison’s talks reflect her radiant Christian faith and beauty of spirit, her extensive knowledge of the Bible, and her deep love and understanding of the needs of humanity. They are concise but packed with spiritual truth with practical application that both challenges and encourages.
Presented as daily readings, each with a scripture to meditate on, this book can be used as a daily devotional (for example, during the 40 days of lent), as a resource for small group studies or as a treasury of teaching material for church leaders.
