Thoughts on heavenly adoption

“Having predestined us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,”
Ephesians 1:5

Maressa begins by focusing the reader on this bible verse.

“Do you find that certain phrases in the Bible are so familiar, you don’t even read them properly anymore?”

She reflects on this question by her own experience as an adoptive parent, which gave her new understanding on this verse that she had read many times.

With a prayer, “I pray it will fill you anew with wonder at the Saviour, who is the Living Word,” Maressa goes on to share some of the things she has discovered.

Beginning with looking at verse 3 which tells us “God has blessed us with all spiritual blessings”, Maressa questions, “Are you aware of those blessings?” She concludes “probably not” as she speaks about the ways that her and her husband had blessed their children, yet their children would often want more.

“We gave them healthy, nutritious dinners, but they cried, for we denied them chocolate at dinner time. We gave them a warm, comfortable bed at night time, but they shrieked because they wanted to play outside in the dark, rainy night. We held their little hands when crossing dangerous roads, and they pulled and wriggled, for they wanted to run ahead.”

She makes an instant comparison with our own reactions to God as we point out our wants without realising the implications, and we don’t consider that he gives us “every spiritual blessing in heavenly places in Christ.”
